# How to read an SBA loan record

> 7(a) and 504, loan statuses, jobs supported, and what the SBA FOIA file leaves out.

## How to read these records

### 7(a) and 504

A 7(a) loan is made by a bank and partly guaranteed by the SBA. A 504 loan finances real estate or equipment
through a certified development company, next to a bank loan. The amount shown is the gross amount approved.

### Status

The SBA file gives a code; this site writes it out. “Paid in full” and “charged off” are the SBA's own
definitions. “Disbursed — current status not disclosed” is the code EXEMPT: the loan was disbursed and has not been
cancelled, paid in full or charged off; the SBA withholds its current status under FOIA exemption 4. It does not
mean the loan is in trouble. Statuses are as of June 30, 2026.

### Jobs supported

Jobs created plus jobs retained, as the lender wrote them on the loan application. The SBA does not review or
verify the figure. It is not a headcount.

### One record per business

The file has no borrower number. Loans are grouped when the borrower name and ZIP code are the same; a business
that moved or changed its name appears twice.

### What is not here

PPP and disaster loans, interest rates, cancelled and unfunded loans, sole proprietors, and businesses named after
a person.
